At the end of 2009 there was a fierce debate surrounding the opening of a housing for unaccompanied refugee children in Vellinge. Council politicians and people in Vellinge did not want any refugees in their community! Some of contrary opinion wanted to block the road into Malmö and show that unless Vellinge welcomed people, they themselves were not welcome in Malmö!
We painted a welcome sign that said In Malmö everyone is welcome, even unaccompanied people from Vellinge, cooked lots of coffee, baked cardamom buns, gingerbread cookies and baklava and rolled out the red carpet for the newly awakened morning commuters to show how nice it can be when everyone is welcome! Some were happy, others hurried on and some got really angry.
